So - Six Apart cut and ran. LJ's been sold.
Is this a good thing or a bad thing?
And is it pure coincidence that this was announced straight
after
the unsavoury flagging system was put in place?

I figure it can't get any worse, eh? Might be a good thing.

True, we might even get a policy statement out of them regarding fanfiction - one that makes sense.

LJ seems dead quiet tonight - I guess everyone's waiting to see what happens next.

I wonder if the new owners asked for the system to be put in place before finalising? I know nothing about LJ being bought out - so going off to explore!

I think it would make sense if many of the recent changes were part of the deal - putting things in place before the take over so it won't look like the new owners are doing anything too drastic as soon as they arrive.

That would make sense.

Hmmmmm...

Very interesting...thanks for the news, seems I'm always the last to know when something goes on around here....

Lol! I watch lj news and their other so-called information site. I find it interesting that they usually make the really contentious posts when most sane people are in bed asleep.

Truthfully, I can't decide whether it really is a good old cut-and-run or something more conniving. Maybe all the previous uproar and leave taking was the desired response to acts calculated to have that very effect. A sort of pre-sale 'cleanup' on SA's part, so to speak.

I do not like the whole flagging deal. The potential for grudge-abuse is obvious. **rolls eyes** I added an erroneous birth year to my profile to get rid of the 'adult content' cuts that were appearing all over my f-list, but I haven't made my own journal 'adult'. By their definition of 50% or more adult content, it really isn't.

Pre-sale cleanup makes perfect sense to me. I'm sure the new owners didn't want to come in making noises about adult content and abuse reports. Bad PR.

I put a birth year on my profile, but I'm not labelling my journal adult - it implies there's Porn under every second cut. I'm not even Friends Only, though eventually I might have to consider that. I'm waiting to see how things go from here.

I did find the timing a bit curious.

I'm going to start by assuming it may be a good thing - there's nothing intrinsically wrong with being Russian (indeed, I've been keeping a wee Russian blog on and off for a couple of years, and as yet no KGB agents have come banging on my door), and one thing I've learned from speaking to Russians is that copyrighted material is freely available, and adult content seems to be fairly well tolerated as opposed to be stomped out by nutty fundies. Since I don't blog about the situation in Chechnya or write long posts insulting Putin, I doubt they'll bother me much.

I suggest everyone gets a good Adblock for their browser, however, and makes sure they have Spybot, Adaware or both!

I would imagine the interference you hear about on the Russian LJ would be more political, yes. I've always had the impression they're unlikely to be fussily moralistic, though as LJ is apparently staying U.S. based, that could still be problematic so far as local law is concerned.

I hadn't thought about the potential for more obvious problems like spyware - I'll keep that in mind.

I've not been around much lately, so when I checked in tonight I was mightily confused. I think the whole collapsing thing is just annoying, and the flagging thing really irks me. I keep thinking I should migrate, but I just haven't had the time or energy to do it. Not to mention I've got about 6 months left on my paid account, which also irks me.

Can you tell I'm irked?

You're irked? Really? Would never have guessed :D

I'm not going anywhere unless I have to - I was gifted with several years paid time, so I'm here till 2010. Anyhow, I remember how things fragmented when the lotr fandom migrated from Yahoo - I'm not keen to see that happen again.

The flagging, the collapsing, all the rest of that nonsense has annoyed me more than usual... probably because this time I can see the effects. Shallow, yes I know. The only good possibility is that the changes might all have been tied to the sale agreement, which could mean the worst is now over. Time will tell.

That is an interesting icon. He he he.

I don't know what to make of it. I am telling people to raise hell on their communities about all this flagging stuff. So lets see what the power of persuasion can do. I am all for pressuring them to take that button off.

Here is your icon...let me know how you like this. Changes are fine too. *hugs*

Aww thank you Jaen, it's gorgeous: an African Christmas icon :)

I'm doing what it feels like most of lj is doing - waiting to see what happens next. There's meant to be a policy announcement and all sorts of stuff coming our way soon.

*hugs*

Oh good! I really like that icon! It is not an offer so only a few of them out there.

I think we need to actively voice what our expectations are here so they have some idea what LJers want. I posted my opinion on that LJ2008 community and I think that everyone should. It is important that they know what people here think of their policies right now so they can form new ones.

How will they know otherwise?

Just my thought.
