Need help.
What would an elf call his/her grandmother? The equivalent of our Granny or Nan.
Please?

I'd say Grandmother. Grandma? (we use grandma at our house) Gram? Grandmama? or Mother/mama for the mother, Gran or nana for granny?

I think in Spanish it's abuela. or maybe abuelita. I kind of like Gran more and more as I think about it...

The feel of 'nana' is what I wanted, but it's not going to work with elves as that's the standard for mother - I was looking for something with a soft feel to it... I love the Spanish, though - abuelita sounds lovely.

According to Nightbreeze who sometimes takes it upon herself to leave messages correcting my stories:

Daeradar = grandfather Daernana = grandmother

She says this is the correct form.

I still use Grand nana and Grand ada because I think it looks better.

Daer-nana would literally translate to "great mother," which is close enough, I guess.

A few years ago, I learned a great deal of Elvish from a person who shall now remain nameless, in order to protect the guilty. ;) Regardless of how one might feel about her otherwise, she really knew her languages. Some disagree, but unless someone can offer proof why her teachings were incorrect, I go primarily by her language guides.

She taught me that iaurnana was also correct - loosely translated to 'elder mother.' This form is what I prefer, and I find it more pleasing than 'great mother.' Or USED to use, as I'm trending away from using Elvish at all in my fiction.

*nods* I am not going to argue with That Person either.

I never use Elvish in my fics beyond Ada, Nana and occasionally Hiren, so I tend to be pretty clueless. I've never felt it fitted my style. Even Gil's usual endearment for Fin in Doubt is English - sweetheart. But I was kind of hoping there was something with the same 'feel' as Nana - but seems not.

Thanks anyway, I know where to come for help next time. And I've just realised that iaurnana solves another problem - so big thanks for that.

I like 'iaurnana' and 'iaurada' best, if I am going to use anything other than English. I do think 'Gran' - which is what I called my grandmother, btw - and 'Grandnana' look good, too.

As I told Fim, I don't use elvish past Nana, Ada and (now and then( Hiren, so this isn't something I know much about - I was trying for something with a similar feel to Nana so it would fit, but I'm going to go with something else.

She has an Aunt called Fanny though, doesn't she? She's easier to call Gran, which I find quite a respectful matriarchal sort of title, than Celeborn is to imagine as Gramps - *retires to giggle by myself in corner, snorting*

I agree - I tend to like iaurnana better than daurnana if you're going with elvish.
