Helplessness.
Dec. 28th, 2004 22:05I wonder how many thousands of people feel as helpless as I do in the face of a human tragedy too big to be properly understood. I am still trying to get my mind round the idea of an earthquake big enough to move small islands and to effect the rotation of the earth itself. There is great concern in my country as we have so many citizens working and holidaying in the area. I made the best financial contribution I could afford as soon as we were given an account number for donations here. There is very little else I can think of to do, except to pray for all those thousands who have lost friends and family, and who have to somehow come to terms with this terrible tragedy. I only hope the authorities manage to prevent any large scale outbreaks of disease, something which is always such a concern after any large natural disaster.

Date: 2004-12-31 14:46 (UTC)I understand your concern. It is very hard to get one's mind around something as horrendous as this. Like you, I sent a check to the American Red Cross and at least felt like I was doing something.
