{Take the 100 Things challenge!}

Scrying is the art of looking into a polished or shimmering surface and seeing images or symbols offering clues about the future. Crystal balls are most often associated with this art, though a variety of surfaces can be involved, most of them easier to find (and cheaper) than a crystal ball. Some choices are water, mirrors, ink, oil, hematite, even steel. Different names apply to the various choices of speculum (scrying tool), but the techniques are all similar and the results the same.

Catoptromancy uses mirrors, both regular or darkened as a scrying tool. In the old days, mirrors would be made of bronze or silver. Aztec priests used obsidian mirrors to find out what was happening in remote outposts of the empire while the Oracle of Tibet used a polished steel mirror to predict the future for governing ministers.

Crystalomancy refers to crystals or crystal balls. The practice has been documented in many parts of the world, from ancient Egypt to the Americas and became popular in Europe from medieval times. More about this in a following post.

Hydromancy involves spying into the still surface of water, sometimes lit by candlelight or the moon. Nostradamus used bowls of water or black ink for scrying. Water can be clear, cloudy or darkened with ink, it can be spring, pond or sea water. Bowls are really a matter of personal choice, though traditionally a dark bowl would be used for clear water and a light one for dark. The bowl can be made of anything from clay to metal, it can even be a stone bowl in a forest setting - hello, Galadriel. Lecanomancy is a division of hydromancy that uses stones dropped into liquid and then interprets the patterns, ripples or even sounds created.

These are just a few examples, the mediums people have used over time are as wide ranging as human ingenuity. Next post I'll look at the art of using a crystal ball or a mirror.

You're gonna smack me when I ask if you're going to get into magic theory and why and how they can scry and get information from the water, yes?

I'll raise my eyebrows at you, yes :D I don't know what I'm putting in the next post yet. We'll see.

Can this be truly done? I mean, have you read about it working?

I think the answer is 'maybe'.... A lot of that depends on your world view and philosophy, of course, and what you'd define as 'working' and how scientific you are about it.

I am very scientific oriented, but at the same time I believe that there are things we cannot understand and maybe energies or presences we cannot see.

*peeks out from behind Red*

The theory behind scrying really would be an interesting read.

LOL!

How it's done and if it works? Hmm. That'd either be a very short or a very long post :D. I want to say more about crystals and mirrors, so - see where it goes.

The way I see Galadriel, she probably had that whole stream-stone bowl-jug thing set up to intimidate people. Really she just needed to close her eyes and meditate *g*

Hi Jaen. I'm keeping it fairly light, but if I can counter some of the stupid ideas put out by Charmed etc, I'm happy :D

And ditto what Nienna said. Galadriel. Yup.

Galadriel, of course, immediately came to mind, but also the multitude of mirror scyings throughout history to see one's future spouse reflected behind you in the mirror at midnight after appropriate sacrifices/rituals, etc. Crystal balls, of course, although today's glass balls always leave me a little cold. A true quartz crystal ball of great clarity is expensive, but resonates better. I'm loving this!

I like those little, solid colour crystal balls, I'm not drawn to very clear quartz as a rule, and glass is - well, glass. It lacks personality, yes?

So hard to condense such a big subject, but I may as well get in the habit otherwise next I know I'll be writing about every rune, each tarot card... I have to write one more piece about balls and mirrors though, they're too central to the concept of 'seeing the future' to be glossed off in a general post.

I really enjoy the clear quartz, but I've also been a fan of appetite and aquamarine. I know how rare true clear quartz crystal without any inclusions can be, so a true crystal ball is quite rare and very treasured.

I look forward to your work with runes. I've never done a lot with casting the runes or the bones, although I have done a fair amount with astrology and the tarot.

My astrology's a bit rusty, it'll be fun to dip into the books when I get to it. No idea how I'll condense that one either.

I love amethyst, obsidian, orange river quartz... This set me thinking maybe it'd be fun to do one of those lists - you know: aquamarine for courage, calm and tolerance, apatite for inspiration, motivation and energy -- and then I realised I was getting a bit carried away and that was probably outside of the scope of these posts, LOL.

Really thought I'd have trouble finding enough to write about before I started, too.

John Dee comes to mind.

Have you read Peter Ackroyd's factional book 'The House of Doctor Dee'?

Oh you recced that to me a while ago, I still need to get round to it. It should be really interesting - he had an interesting life, all right.

Here is a potted, but quite good, biography of John Dee: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Dee

The book is by Peter Ackroyd. Here are a couple of links about the book, which links past and present.

I noticed it was out of print, but I can get a used copy for very inexpensive. And I am actually familiar with John Dee, but I wasn't sure if that was the same Doctor Dee that was referenced in the title because the book descriptions I could find didn't review the book in any way, just listed the title and author. Thanks, I'll think about possibly getting this.

I left a lot out because I want to keep these posts fairly short (how successful I'll be with that, I'm not sure, lol) I think there are as many media as there are shiny surfaces, and in many cases started out by just being what was practical or convenient for the diviner.
