Remember the excitement before the Hobbit movies? I was one of the group saying no, it will be its own thing -- and it has turned out very much to be its own thing, because that's how this odd fandom works. I really hope the Amazon series doesn't have the same effect, but anything's possible (and lord knows what they have planned that will cover five seasons...) /After The Hobbit, I'm too scared to hope.
