Day 7
In your own space, create a fanwork. A drabble, a ficlet, a podfic, or an icon, art or meta or a rec list. A picspam. Something.

I wrote a tiny ficlet based on events in Burning Bright. Annatar thinks on loss.

Time.

Time flowed in its circular river, the ebb and flow beating with the pulses of the world. As time was measured, Ost-in-Edhil had little left. He had followers here who would not betray him, he knew every alleyway, every secret room. And he knew their hearts. Time would pass and they would create that which he required, the artefacts that would draw elven strength and power and meld it with the deep-lying energies of the world, the endless pools that lay here, beyond the mountains, beside the sea. And they would be his. And once they were his, it would be time to look across the narrow, encircling ocean to the West.

He watched the mithril chain that lay across his palm, alive with fire-bright diamonds, letting it slide back and forth, almost dropping, flicked back up at the last moment like a cold, glittering whip, light glancing off fiery points, scattering across the room like ash sparks. One of the laws of power was knowledge: know your enemy, know your objective, know your resources. The resource once bound by this chain had fled, unsettled by something... by what? The darkness lurking within? The loss of control, control that had been given up voluntarily, glorying in the submission, the pain, the ecstasy? A small piece in a giant board game, diamond-girded, its value had rested in the effect that its loss, its turning, would have on the king across the board - across the board, beyond the mountains, beside the sea.

But there had been - something. A resource, yes, but there had been a drawing closer, a place beyond the fear where he was welcomed. Life held few welcomes for his true face. His mind drew pictures: graceful, dark haired, amber eyed, awaiting his pleasure in the reception hall, reclining flushed and laughing with wine in the dining room, silent and pliable in the sleeping place, those eyes vast, dark, hungering. More than an acolyte, almost - almost a concubine, a place of ease in a dry, harsh clime.

But time flowed in its circular river, the ebb and flow beating with the pulses of the world. Nothing static, all things transient. The plan to counter the king would work, or not, but it was beyond his control now. The one he had called Sinque was gone. Pleasures were fleeting, amusements rare. The work would go on without them.

And Day 8 says:
In your own space, create a love meme for yourself. Let people tell you how amazing and awesome and loveable you really are. Surf the comments and find people to give love to.

Ohhh, I get it now. If we all put the meme up, it means everyone has a chance to go around and share the love, because if we all say oh no, that's embarrassing, then there'll be no one to leave comments for. Oh, okay. I shall share love out there *g*

I'm glad we have, so many of us, bitten the bullet and joined in!

So - you are wonderful and awesome because;

You write really readable fic - I never start something of yours and think 'I can't be bothered' and stop before the end.

And the glimpses into your off-line life are really interesting too - I think you are the only person I know who lives in South Africa.

Kei, you're one of the first people I remember joining the SWG back when I was a scared n00b. And you've been there ever since! I have so appreciated your support over the years.

But mostly what I want to say is how much I admire your writing. Your writing transports me. You write characters that don't immediately call to me, but I absolutely adore everything of yours that I have read, and it is safe to say that you make me love characters I otherwise didn't think much about. I haven't been able to read much at all these past few years, but I so look forward to the day when I'll be able to click on your profile and read the stories of yours that I've missed and dive again into those that I loved the first time.

I like the image of Sauron playing with the Mithril chain.

Sharing the love. Here goes: You are one of the nicest people in fandom and I am glad to be your friend. When I read your stories I feel as if I have mentally eaten an enjoyable three course meal with good company. I enjoy our email correspondence. I admire your love of fair play and justice, and your incredible betaing, and love that you would send your hot weather to me in the blink of an eye lol.

Wow, I love that snippet, Keiliss. Beautiful, poignant descriptions.

Of course you are a wonderful person, and one I think does not see how talented and passionate a writer you are. Of course fandoms should always be enthusiastic, or they wouldn't exist, but the people who form the backbone manage to keep their fires burning, and 'Burning Bright' is something that comes to my mind when I think of you and your work.

First, that ficlet: Dark Muse Approved™. Oh, yes. That really resonated with the DM (and me).

Have some love from me - you're an extraordinary writer, you raise and set the bar higher and higher, you inspire me.* I love reading snippets of life in the Southern Hemisphere appear on your LJ, and you bring a smile when you visit my little LJ space.

*I owe you about a gazillion reviews!

Hi,

It's been a while since we moved in the same circles of fandom, but it's so good to see that you're still around and still writing and still contributing to this wonderful madness.

I figured that I'd use this love meme to spread positive vibes by sharing encouraging quotes because I believe that all of us have the potential to be amazing and awesome beyond our wildest dreams and worst fears. This is the quote I picked for you:

“I began to realize how important it was to be an enthusiast in life. He taught me that if you are interested in something, no matter what it is, go at it at full speed ahead. Embrace it with both arms, hug it, love it and above all become passionate about it. Lukewarm is no good. Hot is no good either. White hot and passionate is the only thing to be”

Hi there. You don't know me, but I'm here from the Snowflake Challenge.

I love the way you have with words. I'm not in the same fandom as you, but wow. You know how to write - that was a wonderful ficlet, every word just right. Amazing.

and I think you're really brave for taking part in this particular challenge.

This ficlet took me to a far away place, "somewhere over the rainbow", before or just as soon as time began (before the Ainur came into arda).
And even with that sense of ancient, you managed to make me *almost* feel sorry for Annatar's loneliness. It feels as if he is, but there's no pitying him. He's always controlling, calculating. Impossible to actually feel for him at all.

This is a summary of the feelings this so-short-story evoked in me. A true testament to your abilities as a gifted writer.
I love to read your stories, whether they are humorous, fool of drama, or mysteries as this one feels.

I am glad I got to know you a little.

This makes my skin crawl, and it brings again a character so brutally alive that I cannot imagine to not have known this before, to not have seen these facets of the picture.

the artefacts that would draw elven strength and power and meld it with the deep-lying energies of the world,
Oh yes. *takes deep breath*

Your amazing gift to bring words to life is one of the things I truly love about you. I haven't read that much by you yet - simple lack of time, the day definitely has too few hours - but what I have read has brought me, each single time, in another world. Has brought me right in the heart of Middle-earth, has made me feel the landscape, the season, the current of time and life, made me see the characters alive before my eyes, even more realistic as if it were a film. You transport me there, invariably, each time I pick up one of your stories, and what is even better, you bring me to characters and places I love, or want to see, to meet, and get better acquainted with.
But you are not only one of the most gifted authors I know, but also one of the kindest persons I have met online, answering all my questions and giving me so much with your comments and answers and you thoughtful posts.

Oh, that was all Uli. First she told me she and Eni had found this amazing writer and I had to read her, next thing there was a group or community or something, and of course I was joining *g*. But I have always loved the SWG, because there is no drama, everyone is there because they love the world and the people who fill it, and it is such a wide ranging but comfortable fit (I have even posted Erestor/Glorfindel and got decent page clicks, lol)

One of the biggest compliments a fanfic writer can be paid is that s/he can draw people into reading characters they might not normally bother with. I am very flattered, thank you so much.

DM approved is the ultimate accolade for that piece. I thank you both.

You live in a world quite unlike my own and I love reading about it and being able to enjoy the occasional photogtraph. And - trying to find the right words here - I am not quite as insecure about my writing skills since we met. Your encouragement is a gift that makes me try harder: thank you.

No, he's not someone to pity, that would be an emotion foreign to him. I'm glad it spoke to you, Scarlet. It rather surprised me, but I think it came out right - the quick ones seem more likely to work than the ones that get fussed with for days.

I love that you call it as you see it, that if something I've written doesn't make sense or doesn't appeal you say so, and if I get it right you are as fast to tell me. Also enjoy your sense of humour and the way you're not afraid to hold a potentially unpopular opinion. I can't quite remember how we met (it's VERY late, lol), but I suspect Burning Bright and I'm glad that we did.

I'm so glad the ficlet spoke to you as it did. Lots of little pieces of background came together in my head to make that and I wasn't sure anyone else would make sense of it, but it needed to be written. And thank you for the incredibly kind words, I am so touched by all this. It's wonderful to share characters with someone who also loves them.

Love the ficlet - Annatar in full force and an interesting look at a character we haven't seen the inside of from BB. There's a dark energy clearly shown here, and I love the way you describe the world's energy. You took my prompt and ran with it, lol.
