Snowflake 2020, day 2
Jan. 4th, 2020 03:20In your own space, talk about your fannish history.
I was about to write a line or two saying I wouldn't be doing this snowflake as I wasn't in a 'call back the past' mood but I have a chapter to edit and this procrastination was too good to miss.
2004. Saw mention of fiction in my search for X-Files information and interviews. Went looking for pictures of Hugo Weaving's Elrond shortly after I got my first computer (home computers were a rarity here back then and still the majority route to internet access is through cellphone - welcome to the developing world). Found mentions of fanfiction and slash.... wtf was slash? And when I came up for air I was identifying as part of the Tolkien fandom. Found Vanilla Elf, then Yahoo groups like Elves, Warriors, and Scribes, Erestor Group, LaF, others - many others. And Library of Moria, entry drug of choice for hundreds. Which led to LiveJournal... I remember setting up my journal there (LJ tells me that was October 30th, 2004), it was a weekend afternoon and I had this quiet, happy time learning how to do this New Thing. I wrote my first fic in 2004 too - it was a gen/teen fic with an NC-17 rating due to the (terrible) obligatory sex scenes. (Those were the days were LotR slash fandom raised eyebrows at anything below an R rating).
And I'm still here, reading in several fandoms, still writing Tolkien (hopefully a bit tighter and clearer than in 2004). I'm Keiliss (Kei) on LJ, DW, Tumblr, Ao3, Discord and poor Pillowfort. I can't do Twitter. Twitter for me is angry people and vicious politics. Dunno - what else do you want to know?
