Day 8

Final day.

Seen in the local Mall today: a group of young girls, ten maybe twelve of them, all teenagers, dressed in white robes with gold trim - like angels. Walking through the insane, pre-Christmas crush of the Mall singing carols, setting their pace to the speed of the girl in a wheelchair who was leading them.

I stopped to watch and I could feel all the tension dropping away, and my mouth smiling. That was probably the happiest point of my day.

Reading everyone else's 8 days of happiness has been great, too, but if I could single someone out, that would have to be [livejournal.com profile] ennorwen. She took this meme and made it into something very special and intrinsically 'hers' and I have loved each and every one of her posts.

I've really been enjoying the fandom meme, which also resulted in something special and happy for me --- thank you [livejournal.com profile] heartofoshun for the very complimentary things you had to say about Doubt. Best feeling in the world, when someone speaks well of something you love :)

Day 7
Waking up this morning to the smell of pine through the house from our tree. Fresh pine means Christmas.

Buying flowers for the kitchen. I always have fresh flowers in the kitchen, it's the room where I seem to spend an inordinate amount of time. Flowers and a candle. Normally I buy chrysanthemums because they last for two weeks and I love the colours, but today they had all these Fancy arrangements because of the holidays and of course at double the price. Then I spotted some gorgeous pink and white flowers, no idea what they are, but they weren't expensive so they're in the kitchen tonight, in my mother's big cut glass vase that she inherited from her mother… I like to use old things, I like the feeling of continuity. It's somehow peaceful.

Sitting all alone and watching Babe on TV this afternoon. Smiling in all the smiley places. Occasionally switching channels to dip into The Neverending Story.

Day 6.
We finally have a Christmas tree. It was purchased, brought home, the furniture moved to accommodate it, and then decorated, all by people other than me. All I had to do was 1) give an opinion on which side was the best, and 2) offer praise when the job was done. Very happy experience! You have no idea the wars the tree saga has provoked in years past. Very pretty tree. Has an American squirrel at the top just below the star, too :)

About ready to submit the fics to Zhie's winter festival swap. Just need to find titles for two. This could take all night, of course. Nothing fancy, just a couple of stories that came along and asked me to tell them. One's a cliché, one's a bit strange, but I wrote things that appealed to me and that I hope will please the recipient (v. nervous there) Didn't get fancy, didn't make a big fuss, just wrote people as I saw and heard them and enjoyed doing so. Writing them has made me happy, being finished in time made me even happier.

Day 5.

Not a good day by anyone's standards, but...

Sitting in the sun drinking tea and sorting snail mail. Getting a card from someone I thought I'd lost touch with.
Constructing a quiche using plain yoghurt instead of sour cream, discovering it looks a little different but tastes just fine.
Sending my ficlets for Zhie's swap to beta after some more tweaking. Good thing about getting finished just before a deadline? No time to edit the life out of them. Works for art, too.

Day 4.

I sorted out the laundry area today, otherwise known as the Alleyway from Hell. It's tucked just out of sight off the kitchen, and everything no one knows what to do with gets stored there. Sometimes you have to fight to move between the cupboard where the soap powder is and the washier. Felt like I accomplished something there, good, happy feeling.

Picked beautiful red carnations, put them in the old vase that belonged to my aunt. Prefer the scent of carnations even above roses. Fresh, happy smell, makes me smile.

Day 3.

I got my first Christmas card - from Dark *waves to Dark*. Made me smile, greetings from so many thousands of miles away.

Feel a bit guilty that mine will all arrive about the time people are taking their cards down and packing the tree ornaments away.

Finished the first draft of the final ficlet for Zhie's winter swap. Dunno about happy, more like 'amazed', lol! Now I need to start editing everything.

Day 2.

I got my parcels and cards posted today. No, that's not really happiness, that's more like relief. In fact you could call it unhappiness, because I can
not
believe what this cost me!!!I've been trying to do this for the last week. People can expect things to arrive some time after New Year :|

The young girl behind the counter in the post office was out of large denomination stamps and had to put lord knows how many smaller stamps on the parcels. Somehow she managed to get everything on - stamps, customs declaration, 'airmail' written in huge black letters because there were no stickers left... She treated fitting everything on neatly as a challenge, and took such pride in doing her job well that watching her just left me feeling really good inside. She finished ten minutes after closing time, and tomorrow's a holiday - and she was still smiling. And remembering makes me smile again too.

I'm starting late, so I'll do more than one tonight. If you'd like to do it, you're tagged!

Day 1.

Today we went to price plants and buy compost because we have BIG AMBITIONS for the garden - this usually starts off in a wild burst of enthusiasm and tapers off fast. Was very hot, had a headache, snarled at husband for being a man, but…. found a little stone cat to put on the back patio. Grey and white. Very definite boy face. And when I paid for him, the guy at the till started humming 'What's New Pussycat', so now the cat's name is Tom Jones. Corny, but it made me happy.

Friends made me smile at emails.

Writing for Zhie's winter swap (winter - what a wonderful concept!!) is making me smile a bit too. I'll only just make the deadline, but I'm enjoying myself. Hope my recipient likes what I've done - *is nervous*.

thank you

To My Flist

Thank you for the emails, the birthday cards, the beautiful banners and the many kind wishes yesterday. You are such wonderful friends, and you made a rather laid-back, ordinary day very, very special.

Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] lotrangel17, [livejournal.com profile] red_lasbelin, [livejournal.com profile] ennorwen, [livejournal.com profile] elflover59, [livejournal.com profile] limnoreia, and [livejournal.com profile] elfscribe5 for the v-gifts, to [livejournal.com profile] erfanstarled, [livejournal.com profile] larian, [livejournal.com profile] weepingnaiad, and [livejournal.com profile] silver_trails for the gorgeous e-cards, to [livejournal.com profile] aglarien1, [livejournal.com profile] phyncke and [livejournal.com profile] lotrangel17 for the lovely icons, [livejournal.com profile] kenazfiction and [livejournal.com profile] minuial_nuwing for their drabble offers - I can't wait :D, to [livejournal.com profile] chaotic_binky for allowing me the experience of being carried off slung over Glorfindel's shoulder here, and [livejournal.com profile] red_lasbelin for posting the best buns I've seen in a very long time, here

You are all so dear to me, and I am most blessed by your friendship. Thank you for being part of my life.

*hugs you all*

29) I am grateful that, although I live in a society that is still traditionally male-oriented, this is slowly but steadily changing. The bill I refer to in the next item was signed into law by our deputy-president, who is a strong, intelligent, caring woman - as is the Speaker in our parliament, several senior cabinet ministers, and the truly exceptional Mayor of my city.

30) I am grateful that today - despite shrieks of horror from religious and traditional leaders - my country became the first in Africa and one of only a tiny handful in the world to legalise marriage between same-sex couples. Admittedly the govenrment just beat the one year deadline set for them by the Constitutional Court - it had to be law by December 1st - but hey, we've done it!!

Thank you, [livejournal.com profile] aglarien1, for the idea of doing these posts. It's made my November very special.
keiliss: (Ereinion)
Yes, truly. Twice in one night.

gratitude...

25) I'm grateful that the slashy santa fic is moving along slowly but surely. Don't laugh - this has been a harrowing experience :|

26) I'm grateful for the gift that allows me to pick up charcoal or paint and create someting that, while not brilliant, gives me a feeling of achievement and (sometimes) satisfaction.

27) I'm grateful that I have a fairly sound sense of humour and an appreciation for the ridiculous (and so is my family - and currently my coven)

28) I'm grateful that words sometimes work for me. I love writing, I've written stuff since I was a little kid, but it's only very recently that I've been confident enough to share any of it (well, some of it - not THAT confident yet) I love the feeling of having a story to tell and watching it grow and take on a life of its own until eventually I'm no longer creating the story, just describing it as it unfolds.

gratitude 24)

This time I didn't have to go out and look for a Christmas icon, much less sit and make one myself. It - or rather they - arrived while I slept, rather like Santa leaving gifts *smiles*

Agie, thank you dear - SO gorgeous!!!!

10 - I am grateful that I am literate, and not just literate but that I love to read. Around 70% of the world's population cannot read. Reading is the road to knowledge. Reading opens the way to freedom and empowerment.

11 - I am grateful that I have pets. When the world is a miserable place, when all else fails, nothing will put a smile on your face quicker than watching your oh-so-superior kitty leap smoothly up onto the kitchen counter, misjudge the distance by a hair, and end up back on the floor... where he will, of course, pretend the objective all along had been to perform a mid-air half turn and land up flat on his stomach on almost the exact spot he had started from.

12 - I am grateful for my friends. They bring variety and richness and warmth into my life, sometimes wisdom, often laughter, always love. I don't make differences in my mind or heart between online and rl friends, but something I value in online friendships is the way we are so much quicker to express affection and respect than we might be in a rl situation, where we all too often rely on tone of voice and body langauge to take the place of words.

Lest we forget.

8) I am grateful beyond words to my father, who experienced the inhumaniy and horror of war and taught me that there is ALWAYS a better way.

9) I am, howeve, grateful that the world continues to produce men and women who have the commitment, courage and moral integrity to risk their lives to protect those in need of aid and to safegaurd those they love - on all sides in all conflicts, irrespective of politics and ideology.
keiliss: (journey by phyncke)
Very, very happy birthday [livejournal.com profile] alexcat. May the year ahead be filled with unexpected pleasures and moments of joy.

There was meant to be a fic with this post, but the last line won't lie down and behave plus I won't be able to get anyone to read through it for me before tomorrow. I'll have to post it Sunday *blushes*

Gratitude post:
3) I am grateful for cellphone banking - without which marvel of modern technology my credit card payment would have been late, resulting in an obscene overdue fee. I'll work out it's s new month eventually - just takes me a few days...
