Day 15 - a letter to fandom.

Dear Snowflake mods,

When the word went out that there would be no Snowflake challenge this year, each of you raised a hand and said "I'm here, I can help, tell me what you need." And you gave us Snowflake 2017. I did all the days though I only linked a few (the ones longer than four sentences mainly :D) and looked forward each day to reading what everyone had written/produced for the day's prompt. For many of us, Snowflake has made the first two weeks of January a reminder of what fandom is all about, and that we are many and share a very special kind of joy. Life happens, but losing this would have been really sad.

Thank you all so very, very, very much for this wonderful gift your time and effort has brought us. And thank you for making the comm such a warm, welcoming place.

Love to you all,
~Kei

Day 6 - Create a fannish wish list
Art to illustrate some story of mine that the artist fell a bit in love with? Just something they made because they like it. Getting a gift like that feels like sunshine inside. (heck, isn't this why we all mention art for this one?) More realistically I'd love an appropriate icon for Pink Flamingo, but I'd be horribly fussy about it so maybe don't offer :D

And feedback. I've never been up in the big numbers really, I didn't write E/G back when that's where the readers were (that's ironic, yes) and I don't write Feanorians now. But it is awesome to know there are a couple of people out there reading and liking something enough to say 'Liked this' or 'That was good' or 'Why is there no sex yet?' Sometimes that's why the next chapter happens. Sometimes that's why a specific archive gets used.

Day 5 - Rec fanworks
Fan recs. Oh lord, now I need to find links :( Okay, there's Welcome to Imladris by SavioBriion which is about the early days of Imladris with gorgeous touches and such a fresh eye for an old story. And there's Pieces by AiElbereth, a great A/U --- Erond/Lindir, modern times, ballet. No really, even if you're not really into AUs, you need at least to look at it. Then Red Lasbelin wrote me Can't Take My Eyes off You for the 2015 MSV, it's Erestor and Glorfindel finally in Valinor and how it's not paradise but they're together. And Talullah wrote the most wonderful ofc in her [profile] lotr_community Yule fic, Home for Midwinter. Just so beautiful!

There'd be more but I'm too asleep to go look for more links.

And this is what happens when you think you'll post batches of maybe 3 at intervals and then you get busy and time passes and then you realise there's only one prompt left!!! And so - multiple Snowflakes. Most of them are very short so it makes sense to combine them in one post though I might repost Day 5 with the fic recs on DW instead of repeating it here and link to the comm [edit - done that]

Day 4 - Interact with someone
I do this whenever I find a fic I like because I don't need to know someone to comment to them. So I didn't go out and specifically find someone.

Day 5 - Rec fanworks
Fan recs. Oh lord, now I need to find links :( Okay, there's Welcome to Imladris by SavioBriion which is about the early days of Imladris with gorgeous touches and such a fresh eye for an old story. Sometimes that's why the next chapter happens. Sometimes that's why a specific archive gets used.

Day 7 - Create a fanwork
Create a fanwork????? Ha. Gifties! One still to edit (why do you think I'm doing this, don't you know procrastination when you see it?) and two left to write. I took a few days off here. It was starting to feel like NaNo. Then back into the Flamingo.

Day 8 - In your own space, make a list of at least 3 things that you like about yourself
Good listener.
I try and understand the other person's side, even if I don't agree.
I'm a good cook.
Can talk fandom and writing for hours if you'll let me (what do you mean, is that a likeable trait? of course it is!)

Day 9 - Send feedback to two fannish people
I don't need a special day to do this, that'd feel a bit fake. if I like it, I comment. If I'm on my phone, I leave kudos because I've learned the hard way that I don't always remember to come back.

Day 10 - In your own space, share your love for a trope, cliché, kink, motif, or theme.
politics and world building!
good hair
long fic with twisty plots and several threads - they're easier to read than write
Erestor/Glorfindel
It has Gil-galad in it.

I no longer have to add 'Glorfindel returns' to this list, I think I'm all read/written out there.

Day 11 - In your own space, talk about a creator.
Erestor's Vanilla Elf brought me into this fandom back in 2004. I came looking for pictures of Hugo Weaving as Elrond and discovered an entirely new magical universe. This site was my gateway drug. Bless her for all the joy she gave me.

Day 12 - In your own space, post a rec for fannish spaces and resources - comms, challenges, twitters, tumblrs, etc
Read the Day 12 comments for some great multi fandom recs and while you're there, look for turlough's comment on that list, she linked to some DW comms - really useful stuff!

Day 13 - In your own space, write about a moment in fandom that meant a lot to you.
Posting my very first fic on a couple of Yahoo groups (2004) and watching it sink like a stone, and then after the final part Elfscribe (I was in awe of how good she was, so this was Something) left the longest comment I'd ever seen on a group - it was such a huge OMG moment that it's the first thing that came to mind when I read the prompt, way ahead of things like first MEFA nomination or first MEFA win or the time I asked what on earth people saw in Erestor and Glorfindel and survived... though really, a moment? It's been an amazing almost 13 years.

Day 14 - Go forth and commit an act of kindness.
I hope I have done something kind today. I didn't do anything specific, I was just me? This was another one where I felt awkward about making a special effort.
keiliss: (c_cute by meathiel)
Okay. Wasn't going to participate this year and will probably do random batches in between other stuff, but tonight's writing has got sidetracked so let's see what I've got. (in other words, yes I'm overstretched but but but it's SNOWFLAKE)

Fandom Snowflake Challenge banner

Day 1: Self recs.
The Pink Flamingo - the fic that made me start to love writing again.
Sanctuary - which is elves in modern times and the most fun I've had in ages. I spent days looking for local pictures, following a tourist map, and doing some fairly decent writing (I thought) but it didn't get much attention (Big Bangs don't somehow, probably because they're all there at once, no chaptered posts) In case it's not obvious, I love this fic :)
The Second Gamble - is the first time I've written from Idril's pov. I was dubious but liked her view of the world (and Valinor) a lot

Day 2: Share a book/song/movie/tv show/fanwork/etc that changed your life
Lord of the Rings, the trilogy, because without those movies there would not have been a HUUUUGE Tolkien fandom to fall over and I would never have written the three fics mentioned for Day 1, or any of the other things that have given me so much pleasure/pride. Nor would I have met some of the best friends anyone could hope for or been part of the lives of so many people in such different places. My horizons have been broadened by fandom, and my tolerance for ideas and attitudes so unlike my own, and all due to the movies that brought to life the books I had grown up loving.

Day 3: Set some goals
Write every day!!! I've been doing that with my Christmas gift ficcies (till new year got in the way, but I'm back on the horse now) and I like how it feels.
Finish the fic that must not be named.
Read and comment on more fics - I did not read nearly enough fanfic last year.
Actually read more in general.
keiliss: (starcurtain_by_rainbowgraphics)
Not doing Day 8. The names on my f-list are all of people whose journals I read and whose lives I'm interested in, no random additions.

Fandom Snowflake Challenge banner

Day 9 - in your own space, set some goals for the coming year. They can be fannish or not, public or private.
Okay. I WILL:
finish ANSWERS IN THE DARK. Needs another 8 to 10 chapters. And I will not let the difficult thread make me cry again. It is not the boss of me.
take on [livejournal.com profile] kenazfiction's challenge to write something every day. (wonder if Snowflakes count? *g*)
be more patient and keep my sense of humour. Life is short.
not get in a situation where I am stretched too thin again. Make sure there's time to enjoy playing in this particular sandpit.

All right, that's more than enough :D

Day 7 - In your own space, share a favorite piece of original canon (a TV episode, a song, a favorite interview, a book, a scene from a movie, etc) and explain why you love it so much

So many – there are books I’ve read way more than anything by Tolkien, a tv series I loved, but I’ve been running with Tolkien, the only fandom I currently create in, and of all the many possibilities I’ve picked the piece below the cut, something I've read over and over for its power and imagery, especially the final paragraph. If possible, try and read it aloud. Some passages just work best that way.

Day 6 - In your own space, create your own challenge. What’s something you want to see more people doing in fandom? Is there something you’ve tried that you think other people would enjoy if they gave it a go? Dare your friends to try it out, and have fun with it.

I don't know about having fun with this, but what I wish people would do is be more at peace with their choices, less upset by others' reactions. If someone doesn't like something you love or are good at writing, just let it go. Someone doesn't like your choice of genre, tense, voice, fandom, OTP, deeply personal headcanon? Well they're entitled, so don't let it bother you. We all have personal dislikes, some more logical than others. If we were all the same, there'd be no point in fanfiction. And if they're rude about it, they don't deserve to be taken seriously.

I was always a bit out of step with fandom fashion -- I wrote Glorfindel/Gil-galad when everyone around me was writing Glorfindel/Erestor (whose corner of fandom has shrunk dramatically, and who I now write with great affection), and I love my Elwing -- but it's taught me some useful lessons about going with my personal flow. In the end it's no good allowing someone to make you second guess your choices when this is something you do for pleasure and they are not paying you by the line.

Challenge: do what gives you joy and don't let other people's likes/obsessions spoil it for you.

Day 4 - In your own space, create a fanwork.

Said I wasn't going to do this, but on second thoughts - Placeholder!

Day 3 - In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you have created. It can be your favorite fanworks that you've created, or fanworks you feel no one ever saw, or fanworks you say would define you as a creator.

Something I'd not done before: Love Over Gold
A reworking of the Little Mermaid (not as dark as the original fairytale but no fluff and no talking fish) for last year's AinA. I struggled to find my way into the prompt, but once I got away from the 'sweet fairytale' concept and tried for a touch of darkness, an edge of sorts, (and some unDisneyish sex), I found a challenge I really enjoyed wrestling with. Some of the comments made me wonder if I'd gotten that all across as I'd hoped, but I think there is an expectation when you see mention of a fairytale in the summary or tags. Anyhow I felt I learned a few new things writing it and I liked how it came together.

Something I had fun writing and still makes me smile: Snowed In
Summary: Gil-galad, his Herald and his SO (Senior Organiser?) are separated from their hunting party by a blizzard and are forced to spend the night in a cave.
This was for B2Me 2014. Here because this is what I most like writing, the kind of story I can just relax and have fun with, and the people I love (lacking poor Glorfindel who had to try and look after a bunch of useless courtiers out in the snow and so missed out) I didn't outline anything, I just put them in a confined space and let them talk while I wrote it down. And they obliged by being themselves.

First real Silmfic: The Boys of Summer
The idea of writing this scared me, but I liked writing in Gildor's pov so that helped a lot, that and the bitter sweetness of him and Glorfindel. From the summary: This is about Gildor, son of Lalwen, and Glorfindel of the House of the Golden Flower and a little of their experience during those six days of horror that were the Nirnaeth Arnoediad. It was like the story was there, waiting to get out (does that make sense?) - Maeglin even got into it. The battle itself was confined to what Gildor knew and experienced, otherwise I wouldn't have known where to start, though someone needs to write that story, just those six days. But this - I feel good about the way this turned out, and writing it was an experience a little like flying.

An E/G fic because this is what I like to do: The Wheel Turns
Because it would not be my list if there wasn't an Erestor/Glorfidel fic (Love Over Gold is on here for totally different reasons). And because I do love this one. Set in Minas Tirith early in the 4th Age, Glorfindel helping Erestor come to terms with the fact of mortal aging. I was going through something very difficult at the time of writing, and maybe it shows a little. Oh - swap fic the recipient never acknowledged, btw. If it had been weaker or if I'd liked it less, I would have second-guessed myself for a long while after. Why do people do this?

Day 2 - In your own space, create a list of at least three fannish things you'd love to receive, something you've wanted but were afraid to ask for - a fannish wish-list of sorts.

Comments are always wonderful, as is fan art - maybe something illustrating a scene in Even Quicker Than Doubt? An icon that fits my Answers Glorfindel would also make me happy. Heh, no idea why I find this so hard to answer, guess it just feels odd to ask for gifts.

Day 1 - Talk about why you're participating in Snowflake.

Because it's how the year starts?
Because it's a great way to catch up with other people from all corners of fandom.
Because it's mainly about YOU, not about ME (except for those scary 'be proud of yourself' challenges).
Because it means I go into the year aware of all the things I love about fandom.
Because it makes me smile?

HELLO JANUARY!

Day 14: In your own space, post recs for at least three fanworks that you did not create.

Nope, couldn't stop at three. These were all created within the past year (well, 14 months) and each one is here because it made a deep impression on me. Enjoy!

Days 12 & 13
12. In your own space, talk about what you bring to fandom. It can be something tangible, or not.

I wanted to skip this, but let's try. Um, I write? I randomly update? I have staying power, have been here for years? I read (less than I should). I review when I read. I will talk fic or brainstorm with anyone who's interested. I beta when asked... No, it's not an easy one if you don't run an archive or a swap or do something else the fandom can benefit from. Me, I tell stories.

13. In your own space, talk about a creator. Show us why you think they are amazing.

I did this last time and am still happy with how I decided to answer it. I was about to skip it, but instead I'm linking back: CREATORS

I've just written my first femslash story so I figured that covered Day 10 and skipped it.

Day 11
In your own space, post a rec for fannish and/or creative resources. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it.

All Tolkien:
The Thain's Book is my default 'go to' quick look up. No Years of the Trees, but for everything else it is very thorough --- maps, extra details, comprehensively referenced, names explained... they even have a good Numenor section.

Next choice for general information is Wiki's Middle-earth Portal (you wouldn't expect it, but it's pretty comprehensive, just be alert because occasionally Wiki = personal agendas)

And the SWG's Character of the Month biographies are an excellent resource for detailed, trustworthy, character-based material.

Tolkien Gateway is nice if you also want fan art for inspiration.

ALSO: Travel times in Middle-earth, with useful notes on horses and travelling with wagons. I love this to pieces! How long should it take to get from Bree to Rivendell? Or Edoras to Minas Tirith? Here you go....! Yes it's LotR based, but you can apply it to any areas with similar distances and topography. I lost it for a while and was so thrilled when I found it again.

Day Nine

In your own space, talk about what surprises you about fandom. It could be a pairing or fandom you never thought you'd like. A fanwork type you never knew existed. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Nothing surprises me about fandom, truly. I found it in 2004, a wonderful, complex other world, and anything (both good and bad) is possible. If it is sentient they will slash it (and sometimes if it isn't), so it's all about how far to push your nerves --- back button is your friend some days *g*.

People can still surprise me. Sometimes by how amazing they can be, what wonderful friends, but occasionally in a bad way, often over things that shouldn't bother me because really, not my problem. But this isn't the platform for that discussion.
keiliss: (c_berries by meathiel)

Day Eight

In your own space, create a love meme for yourself. Let people tell you how amazing and awesome and loveable you really are. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so. Surf the comments and find people to give love to.

Oh, I remember this from last year. It bothered me to begin with, then I realised that learning to value yourself is almost as important as validating others, and that love and respect are a two way street, gifts that it's almost selfish to offer without being willing to accept. As women we're not raised to think that way, which makes this snowflake doubly important. We are worth it!
keiliss: (c_berries by meathiel)

Apologies for spamming your f-list, I'm all caught up now!

Day 7
In your own space, share your love for a trope, cliché, kink, motif, or theme. (More than one is okay, too.) Tell us about it, tell us why you love it, give us some examples and recs. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Strange one this, it suggests you only like specifics, like Angst or Food Sex (if this was a list of things I scroll past, food sex would be near the top). There are a handful of characters who don't interest me, but if the summary's good, I'll give anything a try. I like politics, dark and creepy, touches of magic, strong friendships (with or without romance), but I'll read most things, any rating, if it looks like there's a good story. Don't have a 'WOW, this is my THING!' corner.

Oh all right, all right. Erestor/Glorfindel.
keiliss: (c_berries by meathiel)

Day Six

In your own space, create a fanwork. A drabble, a ficlet, a podfic, or an icon, art or meta or a rec list. A picspam. Something. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I just finished two swap fics that I put a lot of my energy into, I have the MSV coming along like a runaway train, I am at the will I/won't I? point with my oeam Big Bang and I have to get a chapter of Answers out. So no, not doing another thing :D I thought of tidying something I've had lying around for a while but that's not quite what's needed, though there are a whole bunch of unedited pieces left from B2Me's Bingo card year --- still, yes. Who else has unfinished Bingo card prompts lying around? It can't just be me.
keiliss: (c_berries by meathiel)

Day 5

In your own space, talk about your fannish origin story. How did you come to fandom, why did you choose your fannish name, do you have more than one secret identity? Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.
