The new SWG survey got me thinking, so here's a rare crossposting to set out where I stand now I've had time to think about all this.

My country was the 5th in the world to legalise same sex marriage and has allowed same sex partners to adopt since 2002, so that attitude has been my benchmark for what's legally acceptable. On my LJ profile page I warn anyone who is underage or is offended by homoerotic content that it's probably not the place for them. That warning has been up for years now. I am not changing it, nor am I marking my journal as containing adult content. My definition of adult content involves something far meatier than the occasional R-rated scene I write and I am not about to designate myself as a writer of explicit content.

There are posts I'd be sad to lose so I suppose I'll have to do a proper backup to DW or something, but my fiction is over on AO3 and my own website these days so they can go whistle. I doubt they're likely to fuss with the English side of LJ, but if they have a rush of blood to the head, they can go ahead and delete me. That's fine. Till then, while I will also post separately to DW, my LJ blog remains active.

(what? I can post on two blogs. I'm a writer. It's writing. It's muuuuuch easier than updating actual fiction!)

I agree. I don't think it's likely that they're going to bother with my lowly journal. (I'm not even sure if my journal is subject to the new ToS, since it is a paid account; it's not supposed to be, but I had to agree to the ToS to access it, just like everyone else.) But even though my fannish existence really started in many ways on LJ and I'd be sorry to see that chapter of my life irrevocably closed, I cannot abide with the new ToS and "making normal" the idea that posting the occasional non-graphic slash story or talking about my sister and her wife or posting pictures of a marriage equality march should be marked "adult" because it might be "harmful to children."

Unlike South Africa, the U.S. was slow to get on the equality bandwagon. The Defense of Marriage Act was stricken down by our Supreme Court in 2013, and only then did same-sex marriage become the (controversial!) law of the land. I remember well when it was okay in the U.S. and much of Tolkien fandom to express discomfort with "gay stuff" and worry over "the children." It still is in many parts of the U.S. I do not want to go back to that or to pretending that is an acceptable view to hold in the 21st century. My refusal to comply with LJ's new ToS is my own tiny whisper of resistance.

I also think none of the English LJ journals of the fandom is likely to be affected, but the principal is what bothers me.
As Dawn said, my disagreement with this ToS (as I don't write anyway), is my little token of resistance. That, and the hard feelings I have these last few years about all the hate-wave I see too close to my RL surrounding.

Me either. And I don't take responsibility for what other parents do or do not want their kids to read and I don't think any government should either. And anyway, like you, I don't write what I consider hardcore material.

Germany still hasn't legalised same sex marriage, much to my regret, although since about ten years we at least have registered life partnerships giving same-sex couples at least most of the rights married couples have, if not all.
But while that's a difficult and sad issue all in itself, the general acceptance of LGBQT+ people thankfully is an entirely different matter here. And particularly media ratings usually are much lower in every regard than in many other countries, as well as other issues, and I wouldn't worry one bit that gay content would be a problem, provided the sex and violance-related ratings are fine (there you have one advantage of our infamous rule obsession - sometimes people will accept something because it's allowed, no matter hoch much they personally dislike it. ;o) ) In general I see the general rating issue rather relaxed, as I've grown up in a very open-minded and liberal family where I was allowed any content at any given age I was interested in, because my parents trusted me to only go where I could still manage, or otherwise ask them for support (what I always did). My sisters and various friends are raising their kids in the same way, and it worked fine for all of us. As a consequence, I find it difficult to decide what of my stuff needs what rating, because I never seem to think of things others might find offensive... so in case of doubt, I usually rate higher than strictly necessary, to avoid unnecessary bother about the subject. (I've had my share of that as an admin in my German fanfic days - not again, thank you very much.)
So for more or less the same reason I've also changed my general LJ rating to adult the other day, even if it's honestly only because I can't be bothered to deal with this issue any more than necessary where my personal journal is concerned. Stuff like this is really stressful for Aspie me, so I try to avoid it wherever possible.
My stories are all also on other sites, I don't have underage followers anyway and my journal here is as it was. (I have to revise my profile pages, though, they're mostly unchanged since I created them.. ahem.)

(Edit for clarification of a point)

Our country was the first to legalise same sex marriages, but there are so many many things that feel so wrong (adult content marking for LGBT things aside) about this TOS that I just simply cannot sign. Too much censorship, to much control over your data as an unpaid user. Forget about your user rights if you do not pay because it is a free service. Back in the day, even if you were a free user, Brad and the LJ crew at least listened to you. The LJ crew nowadays... they keep silent. So many support requests in the queue are not answered as up today.

I think I am one of the few out there who comb through a TOS, but when I first read it my gut feeling was: this is not right on so many levels. I've been sleuthing to get the proper laws to read, to place them in context. But that is also LJ should have linked up to. So I am sticking to DW, I yet have to decide what to do with my LJ accounts. Maybe I sign the TOS, empty all accounts after exporting the data and say goodbye. I haven't decided on that as of yet.

I have a couple of naughty fics, but I can't write naughty anymore. Come to think of it, I'm not writing much at all. Lately it seems like too much work.

I think I'd be happier living where you do ♥
